Who We Are

Skills for Life is a charity organization formed to tackle social problems in the Bradford community.

Bradford is a community with people from different cultures and faiths.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for newcomers, including refugees and asylum seekers, to settle into communities where language differences exist. Older people in particular often live in isolation. It's this isolation that can lead to:

  • Low self esteem.
  • Lack of social and creative life skills.
  • Mental illness/depression.
  • Phobia of the outside world.
  • Low intercultural awareness.

Skill For Life aims to break social barriers and bring people together from all backgrounds and build strong relationships. Language and cultural differences can be shared in a creative environment where everyone is welcomed.

African Drumming

We are aware that African rhythmic drumming is a great part of cultural tradition all over the world. This makes it a creative magnet that attract many people regardless of their culture/faith, ethnicity or age.

We combine the drumming with sedative/relaxing rhythms, dance and African chant. Our previous work shows that engaging people in these activities enable them to:

  • Interrelate
  • Build good relationships
  • Develop social, creative and life skills

These valuable skills provide a positive integration into the community.

We welcome any of the following people to the project:

  • Older people with some degree of physical/social infirmity and isolation
  • Young people with behavioral problems
  • Asylum seekers and refugees
  • All languages
  • Single parents
  • People with disabilities
  • Isolated ethnic minorities

We enable these groups to access our project through outreach workshops. The outcome of all activities in the project include the following:

  1. Development of self-confidence and intercultural awareness of the participants; improvement of their good relationships; and maintenance of peaceful social relationship in the community.
  2. Development of social, creative and life skills of the participants.
  3. Improvement of the well-being and health of the participants.
